Importance

The diversification of the Wilmington regional economy through the development of the area’s knowledge sector economy is essential to ensure the future prosperity of the region.  10-year job growth estimates predict that the working sector will grow by 10%, the service sector by 14%, and the knowledge sector by 20%.  In addition, knowledge sector workers account for 30% of the workforce, yet garner 49% of the wages.

The workplace has changed over the last two decades.  Competition for workers is now global.  Attracting the best workers is becoming increasing difficult and will only become more so as the “Baby Boomer” generation retires.  For every two workers who are leaving the workforce, only one is entering.

Those communities who plan for this increased competition will enjoy greater economic growth.  A concerted effort of key leaders from the business, public, and academic sectors – working with a shared vision – will improve Wilmington’s ability to compete for the workers that are driving economic growth, thus creating more prosperity and a better quality of life for the region.
